This recent acknowledgement of the importance of anthropomorphism, from a psychological and cognitive point of view, should be considered, however, as only one of the elements which should be taken in account for understanding the actual renewal of interest for the implications of anthropomorphism. Many android developers call their creations ‘humanoids’ rather than androids.With the development of cognitive sciences, it is commonly argued, nowadays, that anthropomorphism should be rather regarded as a basic and somehow inescapable feature of human cognition, which is still playing an implicit role for all of us, in many of our interactions with our environment. Robotics added an anthromorphic dimension. Nowdays, this tradition is extended in the making of robots and androids. More recently, however, the situation has begun to change. This explains also why, for a long time, references to anthropomorphism were to be found mostly in the works of anthropologists, child psychologists or specialists of religion. As for rational people, they were not supposed to fall in this sort of trap. But it has also been preferably attributed to children, ‘primitives’, believers or pet lovers. The tendency to attribute human-like features to artefacts, animals or natural elements has long been acknowledged as an universal one.
